Snoring
Are You Trying To Figure Out How To Stop Snoring?
We all know how annoying and embarrassing snoring can be. It can be very annoying to someone’s partner who has to hear their snoring night after night. For the person with the snoring condition this can be an embarrassing habit, and in many cases can lead to complications in ones relationship.
So What Makes You Snore? Well there are actually a number of reasons that someone snores listed below are some of the common reasons:
- Blocked nasal passage or airway, often this can be due to a sinus infection or a cold.
- Sometimes seasonal allergies can cause people to get a stuffy nose and then snore while sleeping.
- A deviated septum, this is when the cartilage and tissue that separates the nostrils in your nose may be crooked. For some people surgery can fix their deviated septum, therefore straitening it out and helping them to not only stop snoring but also breathe better.
- Enlarged or swollen tonsils or adenoids, the tonsils and adenoids can trap harmful bacteria and become very swollen resulting in snoring.
- Being overweight can also cause the airways to become smaller and narrower, therefore resulting in snoring.
- Drinking alcohol can also lead to snoring; alcohol will relax the tongue and throat muscles partially blocking the airway, resulting in snoring.
- Then there is the serious sleep disorder known as sleep apnea! Up to 10% of people are afflicted with this condition and do not even know it. A person with sleep apnea suffers from the tongue and other muscles in the airway closing in on the airway causing people to not only snore loudly but also stop breathing. People with sleep apnea may stop breathing anywhere from 30 to 300 times each night!
So How Do I Stop Snoring?
There are actually many ways someone can stop or prevent snoring. Currently there are hundreds of sleep devices on the market, some better than others. One anti-snoring device many try are the small white strips you see football players wearing across their nose. There are also pills on the market that can help people to stop snoring. For some a simple change in their sleeping position will be enough to stop their snoring, however many of these “cures” will only work for the occasional snorer, or they may not even work at all. The recommended thing to do for those who suffer from severe and chronic snoring is to consult a doctor who specializes in how to stop snoring.
As mentioned above the condition known as sleep apnea affects many people, and unfortunately many people do not even know they suffer from it. This condition not only is very inconvenient due to constant snoring, but can also be fatal; you can literally die in your sleep from the lack of breathing brought on by the condition.
To find out if you suffer from sleep apnea first you must consult a doctor who specializes in it (for the most part it is dentists who get trained and specialize in sleep apnea treatments). The doctor will examine you and then have you take a sleep test, either in home or at a sleep center. Upon getting the results from the test than the doctor can properly diagnose the condition and offer the treatment necessary to help you recover from sleep apnea and stop snoring.
